Bangalore to Goa by Car

This new year was different because I had no plans of going to Goa by Bus or Air, instead, I decided to join my friends on a road trip to Goa. The first thing that came up during early discussion was “which is the best & shortest route to go to Goa by Car”. Since I haven’t gone by a car on this route, the first thing I did was look-up Team-BHP. There’s one thread that comes up when you search for Goa to Bangalore driving directions, but that thread had way too much of information & every person had a different opinion, basically too much of information can be tricky at times.

After a lot of so called research, we finalized the following:

Bangalore to Goa:
NH 4 -> NH 206 -> NH 17 route, that’s Bangalore -> Tumkur -> Shimoga -> Talaguppa -> Sirsi -> Karwar -> Panjim

Bangalore to Goa Map

link

What we thought was a good road was not so great to start with and took us about 15 hrs to reach Goa. I would not recommend  this route to go to Goa, especially after what we discovered on our way back.

Goa to Bangalore:
This time one of our friends called up their driver who had gone from Goa to Bangalore few days before the new year. We inquired about the best route from Goa to Bangalore and I was a bit surprised when he told the route.

It was like, hit NH 17 -> NH 63 -> NH4, that’s Panjim -> Karwar -> Dharwad Bangalore By Pass -> Tumkur -> Bangalore.
At first it sounded like a round about, but we took his word and started our journey at 7am in the morning from Panjim.
Panjim to Karwar – There’s nothing much to write about the roads in Goa.
Karwar to Dharwad By Pass – Roads are good, but a a few small Ghats here and there. Overall I’ll rate it as a good road.
Dharwad By Pass to Tumkur – The best part of the trip. Awesome roads throughout.

We completed our return trip in just 11hrs including a 1hr break for lunch, fuel & tea. That’s just 10hrs of driving.

Conclusion:
Even though the NH 17 -> NH 63 -> NH 4 looks like a longer route, it can be covered much faster than the NH 206, simply because of the awesome roads. Don’t take the NH 206 to go or come back from Goa, try the NH 4 once and you’ll fall in love with that highway.

Vehicle details:
Number of vehicles – 3 (Swift – Petrol, i10 – Petrol, Punto – Diesel)

Happy New Year

Update from Arun(via comments):
Just returned from a road trip to Goa. Great roads until Hubli and then to South Goa via Karwar (again great roads). Thanks for your tip about NH 17 -> NH 63 -> NH 4 – absolutely the right thing to do. Watch out for some bad patches on the road from Hubli to Karwar. On the road to Hubli, and alhough the road is brilliant – do watch out for the speed breakers at junctions (no marking on these). 9 hours both ways with an 1.5 hour stop.

I’m planning to make a trip to Goa and your information certainly comes handy. I’ve read in feew other places about the Blr->Hubli->Karwar->Goa route and your confirmation seals it for me.

    Thanks.

    • http://praveenpn.com Praveen

I’m glad you found it useful.

Do let me know the current state of Roads when you get back. Roads in India don’t stay pristine for a long time :)

        Hi,

Wanted to the Route once again, When going Blr->Hubli->Karwar->Goa

      • Vishal Hemanth

Lol Praveen, I see many refer to your route to Goa but none coming back to tell us about the road conditions at this time… :P I shall update this part after my trip. Thanks for your info though. Going to Goa tomorrow. :D

        • http://praveenpn.com Praveen

Ha ha ha … please do.
There are few people who come back and share their experience, most of them forget. I’ve added one to the blog post from the comments section.

I was suppose to hit the road tomorrow for Goa, but looks like we wont. Last minute confusion.

Happy journey and thanks in advance :)

          • Vishal Hemanth

Oh man, you should have come. It was great weather and awesome peaceful time at the Anjuna beach. Bumped into Malaika Arora Khan with a couple of her friends on the beach while they were strolling around. Baga otherwise was pretty much more crowded so we spent most of our time at Anjuna the last 3 days. :D

The route though is awesome! All through our way we found neatly tarred, wide enough roads except until we touched the Goa state where the traffic was the only bother. Else the roads are superb! I would also suggest people take this route.

Thanks once again for this blog! :)

          • http://praveenpn.com Praveen

Awesome! sounds like you guys had a great time.

Thanks for the update. How much time did it take for you(start to end)?

You met Malaika in Goa – I envy you, totally ;)

          • Vishal V

Well, since my car is pretty old 1995 Esteem, she couldn’t handle higher speeds beyond 130kmph. We drove a lil slow in the ghat section and took some good breaks too. And the traffic past Karwar was a big bother while going to Goa.

We left from Bangalore at 7 am and reached Goa at around 8:30pm. Thats around 13hrs?

Oh yeah there are some rough patches past the ghat section and the invisible humps included. You can pretty much recognise them if the driver is attentive to the road… :P

          • Sunish

Guys, Last week I went goa by car via, Blr->(NH4)Hubli->(NH63)Karwar-(NH17)>Goa  Road is really super, this is the best route. While coming back I have used NH4A to reach Hubli  from Baga(GOA), road is really bad.  Many are asking km to reach go, If you start from Bangalore to North goa(Baga) via NH4>NH63>NH17 It will take around 700 km, also 11 hr you can reach with 1 hr break time.

            Bangalore -> Tumkur -> Chitradurgh ->Dhavengere->Hubli on NH4 roughly 440 Kms

You wont enter Hubli city, there is a bypass-toll road (charge Rs.21) tell him you want to go via NH63 (Yellapur highway, its also called Hubli-Karwar road). You have to go on the toll road for a very short distance and on your left you will get the exist, very visible.
Take left on NH 63 (Hubli – Karwar Highway), drive 162 Kms till you meet NH-17 @ ankola, where you need to turn right (North) to Panjim (120 Kms more)

Total km to reach Baga beach is 710 km and if you start early morning 4:00 AM you can reach Baga by 2:30 PM (you can take 1hr break)

          • Reachme Logesh

thanks for the info dude… will be driving tomorrow early morning….

      You’re welcome

  • Nik

    Hey Praveen !

    Thanks for the info.

I was planning a trip to Goa and was told another option i.e. Blr – Belgaum – Goa. This route is about 100 KM less than the return route that you took and goes through NH4 and NH4A.

Do you have any idea about this one?

    Cheers
    N

    • Pranalima

      Hey nik
How was NH4A…planning a trip but dont know if i should take 63 to karwar or take NH4A. Do let me know

    • harish

Hi praveen , dis is harish , we are going by swift to goa on dis month 26th so please tell me the exact way and how much killo meters ..

  • Aarushi Sangwan

Praveen, came across your blog while searching the routes from Blr to Goa and this certainly was very helpful. Thanks a ton dude.
I am planning a trip around new year and so wanted to know:
    (1) what was the approx kms you travelled since the route in option 2 definitely looks a wee bit longer on the map
    (2) is the traffic on the road safe enough to drive on? i.e. did you experience too many cases of rash driving?

    • http://praveenpn.com Praveen

      @5861d36fc70176f60f18ba0a17d96b2a:disqus  Hey,

Regarding #1, I really don’t recall the exact number of KMs, but you can click on the link below the map and see the difference. I think it’s about 100KMs more than the other route. But don’t fall for the distance trap, it can be covered much faster and easily on NH 4.

#2 – Not really, the roads on NH4 are either 3 way or 4 way(iirc) for majority of the stretch. Couple of things to keep in mind are, tractors near villages coming on the wrong site of the road and some road work -> diversions. Pick driving in the day over night driving.

Also, it would be great if you can come back and share the route you took and the state of roads during this time of the year.

      Cheers!

THANKS PRAVEEN IAM GOING TO GOA ON SUNDAY BY CAR TO SHOWING ME THE ROUTE

Thank you for the update Arun. I have updated the blog post with your comments. I hope others find the info useful.

It’s great to hear that you found this info useful, and yes, 9 hrs - impressive timing.

  • Rajiv

Returned from a Goa trip. We took a route which I have not seen in any of the blogs. It was a nice route.  The route is from Arambol
Beach, North Goa->Sawantwadi ->shinoli->belgaum->hubli->tumkur->blr . From Arambol beach we crossed from Goa to Maharastra via a ferry on river Terekhol. It’s only 100 mtrs and is covered in 2 mins.
The road between Sawantwadi to Belgaum is not that great .The total time taken by us to reach BLR was 10 hrs( including 1 hrs of stoppage)

  • Vishal

Can you also post the costs per person inclusive of the travel? It should give a good indication for people who are first-timers to Goa. Thanks for the route suggestion though. :)

  • Shane_mannas

Thanks for the info, Me n my family r making a trip in Dec. Cheers

  • Tanmaygupta

thanks for this posting. pls. suggest is it a good idea to leave NH4 at Bankapur to go to NH63 at Yellapur via Mundgod?

    • http://praveenpn.com Praveen

I haven’t taken that route, so I don’t know how the roads are. In terms of saving distance, it looks shorter, but again, bad roads might really slow you down.

If you don’t mind experimenting then take that road onwards and you’ll know if it’s good, then you can stick with it while coming back.

    • Sunish

Not a good idea. Last week I took this route. From Bankapur around first 50 km road is really bad, rest of the roads are just ok. Overall you will not get any advantage taking this road. :)

      • Tanmaygupta

Thanks Sunish. i will make use of your input. I read one more of your reply. Which says, it would take only 10.30 Hrs with 1 hrs rest from Bangalore to Goa, which is 710 Km till North Bangalore. This seems pretty impressive. Which Car you drove? one more question, Last week when you took Bankapur -> Mundgod-> Yellapur did it took more than 10.30 Hrs with 1 hrs rest ?

        • Sunish

In last 50 days time, I have traveled Bangalore to Goa 2 time in Maruthi Swift car.  I have tried all different routes. Best one is  Blr->(NH4)Hubli->(NH63)Karwar-(NH17)>Goa. If you take Bankapur -> Mundgod-> Yellapur and you are going to Goa then travel time will be 45 min more even though km is less. But If you are going to Gokarna then time will be bit less. :)  If you are going to South/North Goa you can take NH4>NH63>NH17 and you can reach South Goa with 9.5 hours  and north goa with 10.5 hr. Mundgod road is a NOT a suggested one because you need to cover so many village roads. Also if possible make use of the bangalore  nice road. It will also contribute to saving the time.

Warning :If you travel now(month of Dec), you may not able reach with 10.5 hr. This is because of fog in NH4 near to Hubli.

          • Tanmaygupta

I started from my home in Ramamurthy Nagar, Bangalore East @ 5.45Am took route, tumkur-> chitragurga -> Hubli-> Ankola-> Karwar-> Margoa reached @2.45PM 9.00 hours straight. stopped two time for diesel and one time for lunch.  It was a good journey. Approx.  110KM on tumkur road from Blr, you will see Kamat & CCD, you can take a stop for breakfast if you like because after that till Goa, you would not  find any decent Dhaba or Reastaurant. After Hubli NH63 till Margoa is a single Road with no road divider, hence you cannot drive at very high speed.

  • The mark

    thank u for posting u r details …..

    • http://praveenpn.com Praveen

You’re welcome. Have a safe journey and share your route details once you come back.

  • Naiankasre

    That was really good info.

I am also planning for Bangalore to Goa this Dec and am wanted to know if the below route given on this site would be ok. The main reason is that I am not getting any bookings in a decent hotel in Hubali. Hence, thought to take the Shimoga route witha enroute stay in Kamat Hotel in Honnavar.

    http://www.travelpaisa.com/from-bangalore/276-bangalore-shimoga-goa.html

Bangalore > Shimoga > Honavar > Karwar > Panaji, Goa

i.e. like this on Google Maps

    • http://praveenpn.com Praveen

@066c28a8c21f670c81d54d67891ce903:disqus Thank you. Personally, I did’t like the state of NH 206 roads, I have mentioned that above. But if you have no other option then go with it(Blr -> Shimoga -> Honavar -> Karwar).

Hi, I am planning a road trip from Mumbai to Mangalore and I want to avoid NH 17 till Karwar. So I plan to switch from NH 4 to NH 17 via NH 63. Can any of you tell me how long the stretch (NH 63 alone – from Hubli till Karwar) is?

      • Berny

Thank you Sunish. This is very informative.

      • Berny

Actually I dont want to drive till Karwar. My destination is just NH17 to continue to Mangalore. So I think the distance is about 135 kms. So it should take 20 minutes or so less. Am I right?

        • Sunish

It will be 133 km & you can save 15-20 min. go to following URL , it will take you to google maps, will show you correct info.

  • Sudip

    Hi,

I travelled from B’lore to Goa via Hubli-Karwar on 22nd Dec 2011 and it was an amazing road trip.  We were driving a Chevy Beat(5 ppl). Following are few stats for the trip.

We started at 4:30 in the morning
B’lore to Hubli: 4 hours; 413 kms (top speed 145 km/hr) 4 lane road. 3 speed breakers(traffic signs are shown  around 200m before the speed breakers) after ChitraDurga

Hubli to Karwar: 2.5 hrs 170 kms (top speed 120 km/hr) 2 lane road. Traffic is less with few heavy vechiles. Minor bad patches in very few places.

Karwar to North Goa: 3.5 hrs 135 kms (top speed 85 km/hr) 2 lane road. Traffic is comparatively more. Some potholes are there.

We took the same route while coming back. This time we started afternoon and reached b’lore at 4 in the morning. The Hubli Karwar road was very dark and driving at higher speed was getting difficult. Also we missed the left turn for NH 63 and lost precious time there. We got 5 speed breakers in NH4 between Hubli and B’lore.

Praveen thanks for your blog. It was really helpful.

Praveen…thanks for your advice…I went from Bangalore to Goa via Karwar and not only was the road excellent…scenery was also awesome…only small issue is the width of the road once you enter the state of Goa…but that is a short stretch till Margao…I had a fantastic drive…

Are there any places to see that one should cover while traveling to Goa from Bangalore. The thought is if one can take a journey break while going or coming back

  • sandeep

Parveen, can you please comment on road condition you mentioned a year ago. will it be same, we are planning on 29th Dec to Goa with Nissan Sunny. Will that be a comfortable journey if we take your mentioned route.

    • http://praveenpn.com Praveen

      Hi, Sandeep.
I go to Goa once in 3-4 months, but I don’t always take the car, I take the bus sometimes. From whatever I have seen from the bus(as of 1st Dec), this route is still in good condition.

  • sandeep

TEAM-BHP routes are misleading, there will be 5-10 pages discussion on same route, by the time i forget, which route i had chosen :)

  • Chandrakanthan

Mr. Praveen Thanks for your guidance.. I will use this rout on next sunday. i will give the feedback..See you.

Take the same route(NH 4) for your overnight drive.

  • Ajith

    Hi All,

We were in Goa last week, went by Car(Ritz Diesel) 5 of us…
While going we took Blr->(NH4)Hubli->(NH63)Karwar-(NH17)>Goa Road the road is amazing we had to pay for many tolls but it was worth it…We left blr at 11pm and had reached Karwar by morning 8..we had breakfast in Karwar and left for panjim..
From panjim we went to baga..it was total fun…
While coming back we took the same route but after karwar there is a short route which
will directly connect to NH4(Yellapur highway) ask someone there that will save you around 70Kms..rest all is same….Dhavengere-> Chitradurgh ->Tumkur ->Bangalore

  • Bhuvana

    Hi Praveen,
we have planned to go to Goa by the end of April by car.Its a family trip with little kids so we dont want to travel in one stretch.Pls suggest where we can take a break and also go around for few hours and night halt and then leave goa on the next day morning.

  • Soudager

Please don’t try this route anymore if you’re keen on saving money on tolls.

The route I’m talking about is Bangalore – Tumkur – Chitradurga – Davangere – Hubli – Ankola – Karwar – Margao.

The amount of money I paid is Rs.380 until Karwar. This is because I have come across a few new tolls on one or two of which I paid Rs.80. (Plus Rs.250/- is mandatory, wherever you enter Goa from, if your car bears a non-Goa registration numbers)

  • Harish Rao

Hi Praveen. Interesting blog. I am planning to go to Karwar in Oct 2013. Which route will you recommend (from Bangalore). And what would you recommend seeing around Karwar?

    Hi All,
I am planning to travel from Bangalore to Belgaum tomorrow(27th Dec’13) by car.

I had planned to take the following route:
    Bangalore–>Tumkur–>Sira–>Chitradurga–>Davangare–>Haveri–>Hubli–>Belgaum

If I start from Bangalore at 8 AM What time can I reach Belgaum(Considering 1 Hr Break for Lunch)?
Google suggests 7 Hr 20 Minutes with out breaks.
Where can I plan to stop for lunch?
    Thanks in advance.
